Moving house? Need storage?

Using storage before, during or after a move is becoming more popular as often it can make the whole process a lot less stressful and easier to manage.

So, if you are planning to move house why might you need it and what options are available?

Decluttering

Storing items whilst your house is for sale is an easy way to make sure your property is presented in a market-ready way. Storing possessions that you don’t need or use on a daily basis means your home can be shown off in its best light. Decluttering is Rule No 1 in the house marketing rulebook and storing away all that extra stuff can really help secure a sale.

Storage between moves

Storage between moves is also very popular. With last minute changes to exchange and completion dates, logistics can sometimes get complicated. In this case you might need to stay with friends or family for a few days. Or you might need to do some work to the property before you move in… therefore, some short-term storage might be a necessity.

Major life events

If you are moving following a divorce or separation you might need a neutral space to keep shared goods until you decide what to do with them. Or maybe you are renting temporarily and not want to move all your possessions into a sort-term home.

People dealing with deceased estates also often use storage, especially if they are waiting to decide what to do with items. At such a stressful time it is helpful to have somewhere safe and secure to keep treasured possessions.

Or perhaps you are just downsizing but still want somewhere to keep possessions that won’t fit into your new home. Storage can provide space for all those things that might not have a place in your home, but still have a place in your heart!

So, there are a variety of different reasons why you might need storage – but what options are available?

Self storage

Self storage is best for items that you need, or want, regular, easy access to. Most storage facilities offer out of hours access 7 days a week. So, if you need that special egg whisk for your secret roux recipe at 9am on a Sunday morning, you are good to go because you can just nip in and pick it up.

Self storage units come is a variety of sizes from small lockers to large garage sized spaces. So, whether you have a lot or a little your needs can be accommodated. Make sure you store with a reputable company, ideally one that is a member of the Self Storage Association as this will ensure certain standards are met. Check that you are happy with security, access and things like lighting, lifts and parking (especially important if you intend to be there out of hours).

Containerised storage

If you don’t need regular on-going access to your goods, then containerised storage might be a better option for you. Possessions are stored in large furniture containers within a secure warehouse. Once again, make sure you check out the company that both move and store your goods. British Association of Removers members have to meet industry standards and it means your possessions will be in safe hands. Remember to ask about the security of the premises, length of contract and re-delivery timescales.
